Following-on in my Passion for recycling as much as Humanly possible, aided by a thank-you-very-Beautiful spot by the Mooball Beach............(east-coast Australia)
Is it beyond viability to suggest that, old aircraft carriers, (a la the new San Diego USA "Aircraft Carrier" Museum, the actual carrier "The USS Midway", in it's day the largest warship afloat, brought onto land and converted into a Museum), warships and not-too-delapidated merchant vessels, upto BIG tankers (toxin levels permitting) be "landed" and given new lives as "buildings" as-it-were around the coastline, or to where-ever-you-can-afford-to-"ship"-it?
Perhaps they'd be ideal as coastal buildings for the alleged stormy days ahead?
Quite cosmic too, I believe pictorially, scenically; for "atmospherics".
Imagine upside-down tankers parked on semi-populated shorelines, and converted for occupation as a shopping centre, or business centre, or as forms of accommodation?!
An emphasis appropriate would be on "recycling" of course, and perhaps the promoters could enthread "environmental factors" for or against such vessels (Ho-ho!)
Or warships?
Added together, the cost of transposing old (but not too old) shipping vessels to a site, placed on new modern foundations and converted to accommodate Human onland activity, weighed against the costs of (new) materials uneconomically used in today's buildings, from their resources first extraction from the earth, through the processes of refinement and production, to adaption and assemblage at the project, the former idea must be cheaper, environmentally better, and may well provide a visual bonus and effect a whole new approach to coastal living/working/playing.
The symbolism would be enormous. Huge! Unavoidable.
My favourite enemy building corporation, BORAL, could provide the structural engineers and crew for the design and construction of the foundations etc., FREE-OF-CHARGE!
And if Boral has something to learn in such exercises, then SO IT FEGGING SHOULD!
Mind you, you'd have to watch the electrics! Could fry a couple o' thousand occupants in the steel hull!?
"Tanker-Town-Houses" would, if I had any sway, also confront the corporate monopolies of the (Boral-type) building industries, and the materials they use in their work.
For SO MUCH of what we accept as sound building designs today, are not that, at all. Rather, they typically exist to sustain the wealth of the corporate honchos, with no regard for the destructive nature of the industry's materials supply regime, or of the ecologically dissasterous consequences from endless tracts of land covered with horribly designed and built structures-called-homes-and-shopping-malls, which tend to accommodate greater numbers of vermon and rodents alien to the natural country's flora and fauna, detract from the visual aesthetic, require ridiculous ongoing maintenance costs, and, to push the point, send most of the occupants quite insane, or ill from the 90% increase in airborne pollutants our lungs, skin, eyes, absorb while "indoors".
In other words, our current western style housing and building designs in-general, are deadly for us and for the surrounding environment.
At least near our shorelines, ships upturned might be a cheap and impressive alternative kind of housing etc.
(Have another spliff, Max!)
Max No Difference
PS: As usual, I haven't checked for typo's, gaffs and unsyntax type mistakes, so give me a smack next time you see me, if you reckon it's worth printink!?
