Here's an email I just sent to the federal minister for Communications, Senator Steven Conroy, and to the office of Greens federal leader, Senator Bob Brown......., after sending the bold piece to the ABC Investigative Unit....
"Here's an email I just lodged with the ABC Online Investigative Unit, at around 10.00AM this morning.....
Hi, just now I went to the Newspoll website, looking for the questions they asked in what the ABC News Breakfast talking heads on ABC1 told the viewers this morning was 'the latest Newspoll', but found no reference to 'the latest opinion poll' on the Newspoll website, this one relating to our federal political leaders' and parties' popularity.
It seems undemocratic that this should be allowed to be the case, where we are forced to rely solely upon the news media, in this case our ABC, and have no immediate access to the opinion poll itself.
Also, it is not correct that the inquiring public cannot view the breadth of the 'demographic' of those polled, so-as to ascertain from which sectors of society the answers and opinions are sought.
Although it's arguable that the service provider, 'Newspoll' has the right to arrange their website as they prefer, it is, it might appear, deliberately hard to get to any poll results.
'Opinion polls' are dangerous things, and can be used to pernicious ends in the wrong hands.
As they are grabbed so eagerly by the media and used undemocratically to sway public opinion, there has to be much more regulation, detail and open-ness of their questions, their demographic and their results available to anyone who inquires.
The loose 'opinions', given that an "opinion" is merely an "unsubstantiated theory", of a very small number of 'anonymous' people can never be justified as something upon which governments are put in jeopardy.
I shall be referring this issue, Newspoll and the inappropriate use, or misuse of opinion polls as released via the media, to investigative authorities as soon as possible.
However, as this website of ABC's Online Investigative Unit office says it investigates abuses of media etc, a la "....encourages whistleblowers, and others with access to information they believe should be revealed for the public good, to contact us...", I put it first to you, to do something toward identifying and correcting this anomaly in our deeply awry democratic process, and the freedom of deeply biased 'offshore' media houses , aka Murdoch's News International, The Australian and Newspoll, to manipulate the freedoms they have to unAustralian advantage.
That the ABC, via this morning's News Breakfast program, uses such vague and clearly biased information to put anti-government negative thinking in the minds of Australians is reprehensible, and indeed, in any legitimate court, would be regarded and judged as 'criminal'!
'Please consider!'
I believe it is in the interests of Good Government in Australia, for our federal government to firstly, establish a department dealing specifically with 'media' , and secondly, to investigate fully this clearly politically destructive situation of such unspecific and deliberately subversive 'opinion polls' being made into news by the ABC, et al.
